Search for Freedom in the Novel On The Road by Jack Kerouac - 1100 Words
Search for Freedom in the Novel On The Road by Jack Kerouac (Essay Sample) Content: Name:Instructors Name:Course Code:Date:Search for Freedom in the Novel On The Road by Jack KerouacFreedom is one of the most important things in human life. However, the paths taken by some people in search of freedom take them away from the realities of life and thus making it impossible to achieve that freedom. In the novel On The Road by Jack Kerouac Sal Paradise and Dean refuse to conform to the values of the society and indulge in irresponsible lavish life in search for freedom. From the Novel On The Road, one can claim that although Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise are looking for freedom in life, they are leaving it behind as they defy the realities of life which would be important in helping them to experience the freedom they are looking.Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty have left a responsible life to live a reckless life in the name of freedom. Although it may appear as if Sal and his friend are looking for freedom and the meaning of life, their actions suggest otherwise. The kind of life they are living clearly shows that they are escaping from responsibilities in life. There are many instances in the novel where Sal's lack of seriousness is portrayed. His language clearly indicates that he takes many things for granted and he is even not truthful to his emotions. He responds to almost everything he experiences in life with exaggerations. To him, anything he encounters is the wildest, greatest, or saddest in life. One instance where his use of exaggeration language shows that he is escaping from life is when he says that the Nebraska farmer had a great laugh, the greatest in the world( Kerouac 21). He later describes Mr. Snow saying "whose laugh, I swear on the Bible, was positively and finally the one greatest laugh in all this world"(Kerouac 39). Sal uses this behavior as a defensive way of protecting himself from the realities of life. Although he is seeking the reality, he is unable to respond to situations in life with reality. He c annot even face his emotions with reality, and that is why he views every situation as being greatest, saddest, or wildest in the world.Although Sal and Dean are always on the journey to seek life, they appear to leave it behind them. Their decisions, level of maturity, and emotions are far from the realities of life. It is ironical that Sal is seeking for freedom in life while with his iconic hero, Dean who behaves crazily. Sal is aware of Dean's madness, and yet he allows him to remain as his hero. When they dance the whole night with Carlos, Sal tells them If you keep on this up, youll both go crazy, but let me know what happens as you go along (Kerouac 32). Sal does not only refuse to take the responsibility of others but also refuses to take self-responsibility. Instead to directing his life towards his destiny, he gets involved in a company of friends who live their lives without much care about the tomorrow. He is obsessed with satisfying his sensations instead of his emotio ns.Sal prefers drugs to food, and he would rather buy drugs when he has no enough money but not food. When he is asked by Dean whether he has enough money, he says "Hell no, maybe enough for a pint of whiskey till I get to Denver. What about you" (Kerouac 16). They spend most of their times discussing pointless stories and are always in aimless trips. This shows how the two have lost self-control and indulged in irresponsible behaviors that are irrelevant and insignificant to their lives. Instead of seeing the kind of oppression and poverty in the ghetto, they see the joy that comes from freedom from responsibilities. The kind of freedom that Sal and Dean are enjoying is more of escapism from life rather than freedom. Although they are looking for a good life, they are actually freeing themselves from the realities of life. They are escaping from responsible and rational adult life. Dean can be said to be completely free from the responsibilities in life because he has defied time, l ogic, and maturity. He has no obligations to lead a responsible life. All that matters in his life is drugs and luxuries. The narrator writes "Dean had dispatched the occupant of the apartment to the kitchen probably to make coffee, while he proceeded with his love problems, for him hanging with women was one and only Holy important thing in life, although he had to sweat and curse to make a living and so on (Kerouac 2). After having abandoned all responsibilities in life, immoral desires had become the core of Dean's personality. Although Sal thinks he is looking for freedom, the life he is living is complicating his life even more. Sal, Dean and their friends are fleeing from heir identities rather than seeking or celebrati...

A Writing History Essay - 1274 Words
A Writing History Every great writer, whether it is a poet, novelist, journalist, or any other type will share a common beginning with every person, this I see. Where they take it from there is up to them, the choice is free. The common beginning is simple, even quite easy. It usually starts in kindergarten learning the ABCs. From there you learn to form and read words-the first step of literacy. In my opinion, writing can be fun, but it did not always seem that way to me. This paper will give a brief background on my steps in the writing experience; this is my writing history. Kindergarten, the first step. This is where I started to hate writing; it all began with the alphabet. Writing had a bad first impression on me. I was given a good opportunity to get into writing in the years that followed fifth grade. This opportunity was given to me in the form of journal writing in junior high (grades 6,7, and 8). A few people every day would read their journal out loud and you can tell that some of them really got into. I however, am sorry to say I let the chance pass me by. The journals had a given subjects to write about but they werent mandatory. I remember this one kid, Peter. Instead of writing about the journal topic he would write a Star Wars story. This other kid, Joey, reminded me of Pinky and The Brain. He would always write about ways to try and take over the world-again and again. Looking back I wish I had been as creative as those two young men. Instead I blew off the journal writing. To me it was just another busy work assignment. During that whole time period from, fifth grade through junior high, I had mainly listened to rap. Then rap was music to me and that was that. It had no special purpose in my life. It did start to have a special influence on me when high school came around. In rap my passion for writing was found. For years I had been listening to great rappers such as the Guru from Gangstarr and the GZA (Giza) from Wu-Tang Clan. Then came ninth grade. Discriminatory practice free essay sample
This topic will focus on discrimination and discriminatory practice. When discriminations happen it can have a very negative effect. When people discriminate they treat the individuals they are discriminating against differently from others. People can be discriminated against because of their social class, culture, ethnicity, race, gender, religion, sexuality or age. This topic will look at the different sorts of discrimination, discriminatory practice and non-discriminatory practice. Stereotyping: Stereotyping is the act of judging a person or group of people because of the actions or behaviours of others that are similar. Stereotyping can be on people in certain racial groups, certain age groups, or even on people who live in a certain area. When people say ââ¬âall young people like loud music- or-all old people like bingo- they are stereotyping these groups. Stereotyping can have a negative effect on people because it assumes that everyone in a certain group is the same and has the same needs. Prejudice: Preconceive opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Prejudice means to judge someone without real knowledge or understanding even though that knowledge might be wrong. Sometimes people are prejudiced against others just because they are different, older, from another country, speak a different language or have a different faith. Types of discrimination: Culture Culture is the characteristics of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. Today, in the United States as in other countries populated largely by immigrants, the culture is influenced by the many groups of people that now make up the country. Disability The disability discrimination act (DDA) makes it unlawful to discriminate against someone who has a disability. The act covers empowerment, access to goods, facilities and services of organisations. It now gives people with disabilities rights in the areas of: â⬠¢employment â⬠¢education â⬠¢access to goods, facilities and services, including larger private clubs and transport services â⬠¢buying or renting land or property, including making it easier for people with disabilities to rent property and for tenants to make disability-related adaptations â⬠¢functions of public bodies, for example issuing of licenses The legislation requires public bodies to promote equality of opportunity for people with disabilities. It also allows the government to set minimum standards so that people with disabilities can use public transport easily. Age Age discrimination happens when someone is treated unfavourably because of their age, without justification, or is harassed or victimised because of their age. But discrimination can also occur Indirectly, that is, when care is offered in such a way that older people are disadvantaged because They are disproportionately affected. Discrimination occurs at many levels, from the System-wide to the individual. Age discrimination results from ageism which is a form of prejudice. Despite the fact that the Majority of older people describe themselves as being in good health (less than one per cent of the Older population is in hospital at any one time), older people tend to be stereotyped as a Homogenous group characterised by passivity, failing physical and mental health and dependency. Social class Our social class is the place where we live, the higher the class, the better the place is kept and maintained. When sociologists talk of social class, they refer to a group of individuals who occupy a similar position in the economic system of production. Within that system occupation is very important because it provides financial rewards, stability and benefits like healthcare. Gender A person cannot be discriminated against because of their gender. Under the Gender Equality Duty 2007. Direct sex discrimination is less favorable treatment of a woman than a man (or vice versa) because of their sex. Indirect sex discrimination occurs when a condition or requirement is applied equally to both women and men but, in fact, significantly fewer members of one sex would be able to comply with it and is not justifiable on objective grounds unrelated to sex. In order to show that this is the case, you would have to be ready with statistics to show that the condition would affect more members of one sex. Sexuality Sexual orientation can refer to a person who is attracted to another person of the same sex (gay and /or lesbian, the opposite sex (heterosexual), or both sexes (bisexual). Health status Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made regarding a personââ¬â¢s medical treatment, taking into account the cost of the treatment. Family status This can lead to a variety of discriminationââ¬â¢s against gay and/ or lesbian parents, parents of different genders, parents of different races with mixed race children and other family groupings Cognitive ability Discrimination on the grounds of cognitive ability may arise because of a brain injury, a learning disability or difficulty, or a personââ¬â¢s social class or education. There are many types of discriminatory practice in health and social care settings such as i. Labelling or stereotyping people ââ¬â making assumptions. ii. Being prejudiced. iii. Avoiding people because they are different. Using negative body language towards people who are different. v. Not considering peoples individual needs preferences. Giving poor physical care because the needs of different people are ignored. Forms of decimation: There are many forms of discrimination that we should be aware of: i. Devaluing ââ¬â achievements not praised or being ignored, being unfairly criticised. ii. Avoidance- not listening to a particular person on purpose. iii. Verbal abuse- cursing at someone e. g. calling them fat ugly. iv. Physical abuse- assaulting a person. v. Neglect- ignoring a personââ¬â¢s needs. P3- Describe the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who use health or social care services. Discriminatory practice has caused a lot of negative possessions on individuals being cared for. Iââ¬â¢ll be extending it and giving detailed information about these certain effects of discriminatory practice in HSC. Marginalisation Marginalisation is communal procedure in which an individual or a group of people are made marginal or being treated insignificant In society when an individual or group of people are edged out; normally the effect of discrimination it refers to make the person standout and look very different from others. In addition, this is why they are subsequently feeling lonely and left out from the rest of the society. There has been an extensive range of discrimination circumstances that has been generally discovered by Journal of Social Work concerning marginalisation. The homophobic societies in April 2009 looked at the cruelty and marginalisation of older gay men, lesbian, bisexual people. Later in November, there was a case of marginalisation of children with AIDS/HIV. In the health and social care field, all professionals are expected to know that no one should be marginalised disregarding what their circumstances, sexual orientation, and background or health status. Disempowerment Disempowerment is the reduction of authority, control or inspiration after which people or groups of organised individuals obligate to make their own decisions, selections and figure their own lives from that point and onwards Groups of people or individuals that discriminated in contradiction of, by authoritative groups or other individuals will tend to feel disempowered. Moreover, they might be keen to contest against this situation; in some circumstances they may also conquest their cases. On the other hand, a large population regularly donââ¬â¢t succeed and lose against the discrimination. Consequently, in some cases many might become very depressed or miserable, diminished or devalued and disempowered; which can lead to more health matters. Low Self-Esteem and Self-Identity Low self-esteem is the reduction of pride in oneself; self-respect or dignity there will be a case of self-confidence and self-assurance whilst being discriminated. In the health and social care field, those people who are defenceless and weak are more likely to have a low self-esteem before they start using this field. An individual who are more probable to have low self-esteem will be necessarily experience undesirable self-identity, which might lead to a very low and weak feeling; the individual will start to feel depressed and will feel insignificant. The health and social care workers must certify that every individualââ¬â¢s self-esteem is upheld either if itââ¬â¢s high or can be elevated if itââ¬â¢s low; they must have assistance towards patient and try managing with their condition somehow, as professionals. Restricted Opportunities Not giving everyone similar opportunities as for anyone else due to their culture, age, sex, colour, class, religion, disability, health/family status and cognitive ability itââ¬â¢s certain that all forms of discrimination can cause harm and also lead to poorer health towards an individual; especially whilst not using health and social car facility. In some cases, the discrimination may come from the government itself, or by other individuals in the surroundings or health organisations. Negative Behaviours Negative Behaviours Such As Aggression or Criminality Conservative and impulsive behaviours that frequently results in violation household instructions or the law; aggressive behaviours is essentially fierce and unpredictable. Discrimination has many side effects for example; negative conduct, misconduct or aggression. Individualââ¬â¢s behaviour had a change whilst living in poverty and suffering discrimination. In many cases; it has been shown that many people could experience adversity and then this may lead to frustrations towards the teachers, police and health and social care workers. Moreover, some aggressive individuals may take out their fury on those who they see that come across as very powerfully positioned and therefore, health and social care workers could find themselves physically or verbally attacked or condemned; this may occur being some of the patients could have anger management therefore, they take out all their anger on health and social care professionals. In addition, negative behaviour could also happen while in care by drug users.

Taboo Of Miscegeny In Othello Essays - Othello,
Taboo Of Miscegeny In Othello Racism in Othello Choose one non-dramatic text offered on the module, (an extract from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Literary Remains,) and show how it might help us understand Othello. The extract presents a sustained attack by Coleridge on Shakespeare for his lack of realism in the 'monstrous' depiction of a marriage between a 'beautiful Venetian girl,' and a 'veritable negro,' in Othello. He sees Shakespeare's transformation of a 'barbarous negro' into a respected soldier and nobleman of stature as 'ignorant', since at the time, 'negroes were not known except as slaves.' (Appendix) The extract seems to raise two questions - how central is the taboo of miscegeny to the play, and to what extent is Othello's reputation able to counter this prejudice? It is certainly not hard to conclude that it is probably Shakespeare's most controversial play. There is a clear theme of racism throughout, one which was firmly embedded in the Venetian society which rejects the marriage of Othello and Desdemona as erring, 'against all rules of nature,' [1.3.102] Nothing separates Othello from, 'the wealthy curled darlings of our nation,' [1.2.68] except skin-colour - he matches or even exceeds them in reputation. At the start of the play, he appears confident that, OTHELLO: My parts, my title, and my perfect soul Shall manifest me rightly. Othello 1.2.31-2 when he is called in front of the court on charges of witchcraft, yet the malevolent Iago is able to call on Othello's deep-rooted insecurities about his race in order to play Othello and Desdemona against one another until their marriage fails. Essentially, Iago is a representative of the white race, a pre-Nazi figure who tries to inform the public of the impurity of Othello and Desdemona's marriage. He demonstrates how this miscegenation is threatening to the existing social order, and ultimately, Othello's lifetime of achievement is not sufficient to pursuade others from prejudice in a moment of crisis (such as Desdemona's elopement,) or sustain his self-esteem in the long-run. Othello is structured so that the main premise of the play, introducing the main themes, appears near the beginning. It is obvious that Iago has an agenda planned of malevolent proportions with Othello at its target. He is the catalyst of all the destructive happenings within the play starting from the very beginning when he and Roderigo approach the residence of Brabantio in 1.1. He uses crude, racist language to appeal to the senator's traditional beliefs, including such phrases as, IAGO: Even now, now, very now, an old black ram Is tupping your white ewe! Othello 1.1.87-88 Iago even goes so far as to propose that Brabantio's grandchildren will be animals because of his daughter's base marriage with an 'other.' IAGO: ...you'll have your daughter covered with a Barbary horse, you'll have your nephews neigh to you, you'll have coursers for cousins, and jennets for germans. Othello 1.1.109-112 Later we are told that Iago's motive is jealousy and he uses the rhetoric of racism to undermine Othello, playing on Brabantio's prejudices to provoke him, even though, as Othello relates later, 'Her father loved me, oft invited me.' [1.3.129] A shock and a few crude comments from Iago is all it takes to make a respected figure turn against a close friend of equal stature simply because of skin colour. Technically, Brabantio was not legally allowed to nullify his daughter's marriage to the Moor as she was over the age of consent. Culturally, however, he had all the support necessary to challenge the marriage given common racist assumptions of the time, and accuses Othello of sorcery and witchcraft. This means firstly that he is unable to imagine his daughter wilfully deceiving him, an understandable reaction given her past dutiful behaviour, 'so tender, fair and happy' [1.2.66] and the nature of the patriarchal society in which she lived. Secondly, like Coleridge, he cannot believe she would ever 'fall in love with what she feared to look on,' [1.3.99] without the aid of spells, and thirdly, he suggests that Othello's race makes him capable of these powers of 'black' magic - we have to ask ourselves; if Desdemona had eloped with Roderigo, would he be accused of witchcraft? If Brabantio had not reverted to his prejudices and stayed calm, he
